You may not realize this, but images can generate a Lots of traffic from image-based search engines (like Google search Images ).If you want more of this traffic, you must learn how to optimize your images to score some of this traffic.
In this post I'm going to answer those questions and more. Prepare yourself for a deep dive into "must-know" image optimization tips:
1. Find the right images for posts
Finding the right image is incredibly important. Great images can add another dimension to an article or page that can encourage people to share the page and create some great backlinks.
Optimize Images for SEO "Search Engine Optimization" |
Here are some of the best places to actually find images:
- Flickr – Probably the de facto service for finding free images.
- stock.xchng – Weird name, but a ton of royalty-free stock images.
- iStockPhoto – Large selection of stock photos that you can buy.
- Google.com
2. Use keyword rich alt text
Alt text simply refers to a text alternative for images when a web browser can’t properly render them. How many times have you opened up an email on your desktop or mobile device and the image(s) didn’t load? Did you still decide to click on the image or call-to-action to visit the landing page? As marketers, we want to take advantage of writing a descriptive, keyword-rich alt text to increase the likelihood of click-through-rates even if our images can’t render properly for our users.
3. Use the keyword in the file name for Better Goggle Page Rankings
For example, the image above was originally named “jgj765r245XSmall.jpg” which doesn’t add much information about this web page. It has been renamed to “image-name.jpg”. Of course, most images that are not simply decorative like the one above are literal and connected to the content of the page such as a photo of a product. If the above image were used in an article about eye color, then the file name should reflect that.
4. Optimize Your Alt Tags Intelligently
Alt tags are a text alternative to images when a browser can't properly render them. Even when the image is rendered, if you hover over it with your mouse pointer, you can see the alt tag text created for that image. The alt attribute also adds SEO value to your website. Adding appropriate alt tags to the images on your website can help your website achieve better rankings in the search engines by associating keywords with images. As a matter of fact, using alt tags is probably the best way for your ecommerce products to show up in Google image and web search.
5. File size should be small
There are two aspects to an image file size. The first is the dimensions of the image, and the second is how much storage space the image requires. When optimizing an image, you want the dimensions to be as big as possible, yet you want the storage space to be as small as possible. Through programs like Skitch, you can adjust the dimensions, while keeping the storage size small through compression.
Best of all, programs like Skitch will help you maintain the quality of the image as you don’t want to compress it so much that the image doesn’t look good anymore.
